A life between meals
I live my life between meals and workouts, but pretty much most the time I'm thinking about food and what and when my next meal is going to be! Admit it, food is awesome and you love it, but do you love it too much?
It's easy to over eat. It's easy to eat stuff that's not going to help you reach your goals. It's easy to give in to cravings. In a battle between a Five Guys burger & fries vs my will power - the five guys out number me and I buckle every time!
Reality is none of us are perfect and I tend to have my well earned enjoyment meals planned weeks in advance. So how do you avoid temptation and stay on the path to success?
Create a healthy, goal driven Food Environment.
Where do you spend most of your time? Mine is at my desk at home, or in the gym. You might be at home, in the office, in the car (I spent years working as a field sales exec, I know your pain).
No matter where you are, if you can control the environment you can give yourself a better chance of nutritional success. Plan your meals and prepare food for when you're not at home.
So go home, clear out your cupboards of the obviously unhealthy foods - put it in bags to one side. Then take a second pass, clear out any processed, refined sugars and carbs - think along the lines of the bags of pasta, bread, crackers, sweetened cordials ,sugary yoghurts and cereals. Get it all in the bags, then take a walk down the street to the nearest shelter or homeless person and make their day by giving them the bag/s.
Now lets think success and goals - lets think natural food, raw food, fresh produce, it's not hard. Fruit replaces sugar, Veg replaces carbs, lean chicken, beef and fish replace that nasty ready meal you were going to have.
The bag of sweets you have a work for that mid afternoon lull, bin them! Replace them with a bag of shelled peanuts or almonds - they have more energy and protein and will help you reach that goal you're working so hard for.
When you can't control the food environment make smart choices. Ditch the bun on your burger, or opt out of the fries (take one or the other you don't need both). If you're out at a nice restaurant then go with a salad to start, ask if they can replace the potatoes with extra veg.
If you really can't come up with a smart swap then have a pint of water before you eat and then enjoy the meal, avoid desert and work double hard tomorrow on your session and food.
You work hard and move daily, you earn an enjoyment meal each week - plan it if you can, and if you can't, go with the flow and enjoy it when it happens. Just don't let it happen all the time!
